Reflection Paper: A Career As A Psychology Class

Throughout this semester, I learned a lot about myself, and I found a new passion, psychology. In high school I had the privilege to take a sociology course, and I really enjoyed it, so I was enrolling for my first semester in college and decided to take psychology 1101. This by far was one of the best decisions of my freshmen year. This class opened an entirely new world within my degree. As a Biological Sciences major, I was excited to explore different branches of biology but I never thought one would inspire me as much as this one class did. My family suffers from many mental illnesses, specifically my mother. She actually was diagnosed with bi-polar about 5 years ago along with a personality disorder. My mother always seemed to be a little off, because sometimes she would be coming home from work with 4 bags from JC Penney happy as hell, and would cook a great dinner, and hangout with the family. Other nights she would come home and collapse on the couch crying, and then yell at anyone who got close. She then got diagnosed with bi-polar after she drove herself to the hospital after downing a handful of pills. Later she received disability because she was unable to work after that. The class taught me that the …show more content…
During these moments within my family, I notice that when it comes time to prove their point both sides can find some article that shows that they are correct and neither take the time to look at the others article because it would challenge their way of thought. I always wondered why people did this, and then I found its actually a term in psychology called confirmation bias. Right as I heard this in class it changed the way I took in information, and I realized social media allows you to do it so easily, and that’s what happened to me. Now I do my best to challenge my own views to learn more about this

Psychology 201 has been a very intriguing course for me so far. I really enjoyed learning about how the brain works and how big of a role it plays in our lives. Some specific areas of psychology I enjoyed studying were Operant Conditioning, the theories of motivation, and Jean-Dominique Bauby. Operant Conditioning was a familiar concept, even though I was not familiar with the specific terminology. I think reinforcement and punishment are very interesting topics that apply to everyone's lives.…

Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

Relatives may feel guilty for becoming stressed and wanting a break from the rollercoaster ride of emotions the whole family is taken on. Of course, when the term “Bipolar Disorder” is heard the feelings of the patient are often overlooked or not sympathized with. Patients are very likely to feel guilty for the stress they feel they put on others, as if they are a burden for everyone around them. It is common for them (patients) to have trouble keeping friends and jobs. If the disorder goes undiagnosed it will worsen throughout…

In the beginning of second semester I was being introduced into Psychology 101 which I had no idea on what this course will be teaching. As I just know the word “PSY” it would be mentioning about physical or something to do with the body. Then, doing some research about what Psychology will be teaching about from YouTube. Also, reading some articles from this website on what they will be mentioning about what the body will reacts to some situations. In the past months as learning about the basic about Psychology 101 this would be an advantage in taking the next step of becoming a police officer which I could use it to think like a victim and mange an issue or situation into peace that everything could be resolved in a matter of a way.…

There were four big issues ( diagnosis, stigma, insurance and involuntary admission) during my mother’s 35+ years of mental health issues. The first was achieving a professional diagnosis of her mental condition and the second was the stigma of mental health. The diagnosis for mental health illness are statistically derived from a scoring system on a list of enumerated symptoms for each diagnosis as a conglomeration or array of variety of psychological functions such as memory, learning, perception, consciousness, emotions, thought, reasoning, imagination and problem solving and until recently only the patient was permitted to participate in the evaluation not friends or family (Thirunavukarasu, 2011). Since my family was able to give testimonies as to her manic-psychosis episodes she was finally diagnosed.…

Kate Middleton once said, “A child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health, and deserve the same quality of support. No one would feel embarrassed about seeking help for a child if they broke their arm -- and we really should be equally ready to support a child coping with emotional difficulties.” If you had a friend, family member, or spouse with some type of mental illness would you want them to be criticized over something they can’t control? The stigma of mental illness is taking a huge role in today 's society in a destructive way. The stigma of mental illness needs to be diminished.…

An area of Applied Psychology 1 that has captured my interest is the field of educational psychology. This field of study is interested with children and young adults in educational and early years’ settings (British Psychology Society (BPS), 2016). This has captured my interest as children are especially vulnerable during school years, due to a variety of reasons such as low self esteem. This could be due to learning difficulties such as dyslexia and behaviourial problems. I believe that I would find it rewarding to work with children to help them develop their own skills and abilities in regards to the obstacles shown early in their life.…
