According to Carl Jung in his essay, Psychology and Literature, “psychology being the study of psychic processes can be brought to bear upon the study of literature, for it is the human psyche from which sciences and arts originate”(Ross). These lines clearly hint that literature and psychology are very much related to each other. Literature deals with the deeper aspects of human life that can be analyzed through psychoanalysis (Freud 11). Literature is the product of mind and Psychology is the study of mind. So by analyzing literature through psychological perspective, author and its works can be analyzed. Fiona and Grant are elderly husband and wife, who love each other. Though grant shows sometimes sign of weak character. He gets attracted towards other women, but is always there for his wife in every situation. On the other hand Fiona is rich from her parent’s side and owns a big farm. But due to some biological reasons, she is unable to become a mother. This emptiness and barrenness create a deep depression in her mind. To overcome such emptiness in her life she adopts two wolf-hounds named Boris and Natasha. This shows a displacement attitude. Later on the sudden demise of these two dogs and her mother, leaves her totally alone. She can’t handle this loneliness and grows psychologically ill. Later on due to such conditions she gets afflicted with Alzheimer, a memory loss disease. This can be seen as a defense mechanism applied by her brain. Excessive depression and sadness made her prone to dementia, deleting all sorts of memory whether good or bad from her
