Studies show that from an early age, social support influences development of a child’s self-perception and academic performance (Ai & Hu, 2016; Israelashvili & Wegaman-Rozi, 2003). Typically, children raised in lower social classes or lower income communities are more prone to experience issues with self-perception or academic performance (Chesmore, Watson &Brady, 2016; Horning & Rouse, 2002). Promoting psychological resilience by increasing social support can help to counterbalance the effects of their environment (Israelashvili et al. 2003). Research shows that psychological resilience helps to act as a barrier to internal influences (Ai et al, 2016, Putwain, Nicholson, Connor, & Woods 2013,). Other research has shown that adding social support increases psychological resilience (Israelashvili et al. 2003). Although previous research has looked at the relationship between social support and psychological resilience, there are a limited number of methods researched in how to promote them (Israelashvili et al. 2003).
