Al Qaeda, which is Arabic for “the base”, is an Islamic terrorist group whose ultimate goal is to establish its version of Islamic rule all across any Muslim territory. 9/11, as well as other terrorist attacks, were some of the many attacks in the past decade conducted by Al Qaeda. On September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda hijacked 4 American passenger planes. Then, they flew those planes, conducting a suicide mission as they flew those hijacked planes into both Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The 4th plane mysteriously landed in Pennsylvania, most likely because of the passengers fighting back. Soon after that, the South Tower had fallen because of the intense heat of the burning jet fuel, followed by the North Tower. (History.com Staff, 2009). The 9/11 attacks on Washington D.C. caused many different psychological and emotional effects to occur afterwards, such as an increase in airline security and immigration policies, a rise in anti-Islamic violence, and a major blow to the USA’s morale. It’s significant because without 9/11, the majority of citizens of the USA wouldn’t know about 9/11, and the government wouldn’t have started a “War on Terrorism” campaign to stop Al Qaeda in its tracks. The attacks are also the reason why people have to go through the hassle of the annoying long security checks or airplane rules. It majorly affected the society we live in today, mainly because the citizens are now paranoid of a second attack on the country.
