Major depression disorder otherwise known as clinical depression, is a major medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. People with clinical depression are not able to function as they used to. Often, they lose interest in activities that were once enjoyable to them and feel sad and hopeless for long periods of time. Clinical depression is not the same as feeling sad or depressed for a few days and then feeling better. It can affect your body, mood, thoughts, and behavior. It can change your eating habits, how you feel and think, your ability to work and study, and how you interact with people. People who suffer from clinical depression often report that they don't feel like themselves anymore. …show more content…
Each year it affects over 17 million American men and women (American Psychiatric Association). There has been a 37% increase of depression from 2005 to 2015, mainly teens from 12-18 years of age. (Time Magazine) Depression is the number one psychological disorder in the world. At the rate of increase, it will be the second most disabling condition in the world by 2020. (Mark Tyrrell) Women are at higher risk for depression but it may be because women are more likely to seek help. Men are more likely to commit suicide before seeking help for their depression. Mourning after a loved one has passed is normal but if grieving goes on for too long it may turn into depression. Even after the mourning process is over, there is still risk of another depression episode on the anniversary of the loved one’s death. Finding ways to avoid depression or having a relapse can benefit you greatly such as not taking on too many tasks. Having a busy life is great but it can also become stressful. Everyone experiences stress, it keeps you alert and it is a normal psychological and physical reaction to positive or negative situations in your life. (Mayoclinic.org) Experiencing stress is not abnormal but how you deal with it is what can be harmful. If you don’t handle stress well, it can overwhelm you and depression will take over. Finding the right help and having a support system will benefit you greatly when dealing with depression. Depression can take over any life if you allow it to.
There are 12 different types of depression and they are, persistent depression disorder, subsyndrome depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, bipolar depression, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, postpartum depression, seasonal affective disorder, substance induced mood disorder, psychotic depression, depression due to illness and lastly clinical
