Psychological considerations and sociological effects of 3D Printing The use of 3D printers will bring about many changes, the biggest being in the manufacturing industry. While most discussions about 3D printing are in regards to its impact on manufacturing, one of the underlying topics that is overlooked is the impact that 3D printing will have on society.
The biggest case against 3D printing is its ability to make weapons. In 2013, 3D printing made headlines in the U.S. when the printers were successfully able to replicate working guns. With the online phenomena taking over, most of our tasks are done online. Some examples include shopping, banking, working from home, going to school online, ordering food, etc the list goes on. The point being is that the daily tasks that we normally do by going outside the house can now be done at home. As a result by not going to the local grocery store and such, people do not have much human interaction. Now throw 3D printing in the mix and now people can make their own objects from home. By simply being able to make your own object at home it gives people a lesser incentive to leave their houses. With 3D printing expanding its capabilities to more than just replicating objects, but being able replicate food, vehicles, and even medicineit will make more people want to stay at home and reinforce the sense of not needing to leave the …show more content…
There was little success and the majority was unsuccessful. The company that did see success was MakerBot. The company is from the U.S. and they managed to introduce personal 3D printing to the world by using free software, like the open-source Meshlab and Google Sketchup to create 3D digital models. They also manage a website called Thingiverse.com that was inspired by Andrew Boyers vision of building a community where people can share their 3D printer ideas. The site showcases peoples 3D designs, ideas,and products as well as provides the blueprints to make these designs on the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer.
As prices begin to decline and new and cheaper material begin to surface (as of right now the most popular ink is plastic),the software for 3D printing is becoming much easier to use and there is a growing community for 3D printers.There is good chance that 3D printing can be a common product used in every household and business in the near future. Only time will tell how this new technology will affect our society that is dominated by consumerism and mass manufacturing.
