When I was young and in grade school, I spent many of my summer Saturdays at Homewood at Crumland Farms, a retirement home in Frederick, Maryland. As a volunteer, I not only developed a fair understanding of what it meant to be psychologically and physically healthy, but I developed lasting relationships with the residents and their families as well. Through these relationships, I developed a strong interest and concern for the mental and emotional wellbeing of not only elderly individuals but all types of people as well, inspiring me to pursue psychology when I entered college years later.
