The positive side is that most professional athletes live a wonderful lifestyle and do an outstanding amount of charity work for others and their communities. In fact, one of the most dynamic soccer players to ever step foot on the pitch was the number one most charitable athlete of that year. David Beckham not only dazzled fans with his crafty footwork, but he also made many leaps and bounds for the UNICEF foundation. An article on “Bleacher Report” states, “Beckham supports countless programs, most prominently UNICEF, for which he works as an ambassador and helps with the Unite Against AIDS Campaign. He also has his own charity, the Victoria and David Beckham Charitable Trust, which, according to looktothestars.org, provides children with wheelchairs, among other causes…” (Scherer, “Top 10”). Who knows how far Beckham has brought the foundation in the 4 years since the last quote. Although a small percentage of professionals end up abusing their situation, the rest are amazing role models for young people. They go to work, provide for their families, stay out of trouble, and even get paid to play the sport they love. These professionals portray the message of giving back. The survey, that was done in 2015, also showed a big push of kids going towards STEM careers. Unfortunately, there was a very small number of females that showed interest in being a professional athlete when they grow up. The author says, “The STEM results are good news, he says, but the fact that girls don’t want to grow up to be athletes shows that we aren’t exposing them to enough athletics and sports…” (Adams, “What Kids”). Some parents have made it very clear that they do not want their children to be looking up to professional athletes. However, what if more females did have athletic role models? If more girls were to take in interest in athletics, gender equality in today’s society might be decreased. It all starts will a solid role model that young women can look up to. For example, Serena Williams is a world class tennis player who does not take losing for an answer. Compared to a popular role model such as Lindsay Lohan, Williams provides a better example for developing, young girls.
