Psychoeducational Group Reflection Paper

The group I designed is a psychoeducational group for substance abuse. The reason I felt this group was important is that it’s not just about learning about how substances like alcohol, street drug’s like cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, and prescriptions drugs like opiates and benzodiazepine’s can affect you, but how the use of these drugs often lead to other mental health issues like psychosis, depression, and suicide. Psychoeducational groups generally teach clients that they need to learn to identify, avoid, and eventually master the specific internal states and external circumstances associated with substance abuse (SAMHSA, 2005) Too often individuals are not aware of the consequences of their actions with regard to substance abuse, especially when they’re in the moment. However, my group will not just be me as the leader telling my clients what to do to better their lives, it will be talking therapy that consists of equal amounts of dialogue between the clients and the leader. The group will also consist of lectures via PowerPoint, which often lead to meaningful discussion about the material viewed. Throughout the group, the clients will be provided with community resources. The overall goal of the group is to give my clients through education and psychotherapy the tools that will allow for immediate application to their lives, which will allow for significant growth and changes in their lives, provide a sense of empowerment and self-awareness that will aid in recovery, and help diminish
