Introduction
There are numerous aspects when evaluating and assessing groups and the implementation of appropriate interventions. Not only the application of social work theory and intervention models, but social workers must also evaluate group set-up, agency objectives and consistently the dynamics of groups to include the composition of the group. There are several theoretical models appropriate for individuals with substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, the agency employs the use of cognitive behavioral therapy interventions. One particular group within the program is Straight Ahead a structured curriculum psychoeducational group.

Topics in this group include maintaining recovery, improving social networks and support systems, developing effective communication, and having higher quality relationships, developing coping mechanisms, and managing emotions and aggression. As an evidence-based group Straight Ahead is both reliable and has shown to effectively aid client’s lower likelihood of substance reuse, improve criminal associations to include people, places, and environment, promote healthy relationships, coping, and pro-social activities. Sessions incorporate solution-focused therapy, concentrating on clients' developing more practical management of life challenges. The curriculum includes the use of mapping exercises and cognitive behavioral therapy ABC model worksheets. Activities promote self-awareness, processing life events, associated irrational thoughts and beliefs, and resulting behavioral choices. Individuals then attend a secondary orientation with a clinician. During this orientation, clinicians provide an introduction to the treatment aspect of the program, the clinician themselves, groups assigned, and provides required workbooks for certain groups. Clinicians also conduct a clinical assessment and develop a mutually agreed upon case plan. The case plan incorporates goals and tasks clients themselves have, as well as, identified goals based on risk assessment clients completed upon initial screening that identifies risk factors and level and likelihood of associated criminogenic behaviors. At this time, clinician review client-patient confidentiality and provided a brief explanation of different professional roles of clinicians and probation officers.
