“Your source material is the people you know, not those you don't know, but every character is an extension of the author's own personality” (Edward Albee). William Golding shows this in his book, Lord of the Flies. The story begins with a group of boys surviving an airplane crash on an empty island. With no adults, they are left to fend for themselves. They try to set up a democracy with rules, but slowly their civilized self starts to die and their savage side starts to take over. Ralph, the elected leader of the group, slowly loses his power to Jack, the leader of the choirboys, who uses the others’ fears to gain more followers. Ralph notices what is happening to them all after Simon, the introvert on the island, is killed by Jack and his followers in a hectic mess. Sigmund’s personality theory, the theory that there is multiple parts of a personality that different people have, is also relatable to Lord of the Flies because it is able to …show more content…
According to Freud’s theory, the there is 3 parts to the personality, the ID, the ego, and the superego. “The id seeks immediate satisfaction and operates on the pleasure principle which means that it wants what it wants when it wants it” (“Psychodynamic Theory of Personality”). The ID is considered impulsive and acts on its own accord. It’s needy and pursues whatever it wants without consideration for anyone else (“Psychodynamic Theory of Personality”). Ralph and Simon were building huts, which they think is necessary for survival. Jack returns from a hunt, talking about how close he was. Butler. Everyone needs their “place” in society: leader, hunter, builder, or even follower and securing a place in society can often lead to conflict. The need for hierarchy is evident all throughout Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding about a group of British boys stranded alone on an island. When the teacher leaves the room in elementary school, the first thing that comes to the children's minds is to scream “Party!” throw things and stand on desks, but as soon as the teacher arrives back in the classroom they immediately sit down. This idea is demonstrated in William Golding's Lord of the Flies when their symbols of power and authority, the conch shell and their uniforms, are taken away by nature. With the loss of those symbols, their civility is lost as well. Through this, Golding is claiming that when authority is no longer present, humans can easily fall back into savagery. When humans are left on their own, everyday survival tasks become a way into savagery.…

In relation to human behavior, William Golding suggests that people follow what the majority of others around them are doing. On page ninety-one of Lord of the Flies, continuing onto page ninety-two (chapter five, Beasts From Water), there is a quote that relates to this idea ,“He gave a wild whoop and leapt down to the pale sand. At once, the platform was full of noise and excitement, scramblings, screams and laughter. The assembly shredded away and become a discursive and random scatter from the palms to the water and away among the beach, beyond night-sight”. While the English school boys, on the island, evolved into demonic beasts without a strong parental-esque influence supporting them, modern U.S. high school students are not much different. Many adolescents let unachievable standards set by the media and their own peers dictate their social lives, and as a result, many teenagers, depressed, resort to unhealthy methods of dealing with stress if they are not able to reach the set standards. A hope for solvency, parents possess the ability to stop these cycles of conformity; as University of New Hampshire’s Amber Carlson puts it, “parental support is the largest influence on creating preferable behavior in adolescents” (Carlson, 42). In a speech to the Brookfield East student body regarding the…
