Psychodynamic Theory In Social Work

I don’t think that there is any one theory that capture’s the truth. I believe that the truth is different for everyone. It brings to mind the story of the family of four who took a vacation together. Each one was asked to write about the vacation. None of the stories sound the same, some might have believed that they really did not go together, but the reality of it was that each person had the same experience and perceived it differently. If something this simple as a vacation has four different perceptions, how can one theory capture the truth? This little example does not take into consideration possible mental health issues of anyone involved in the vacation. What if Uncle Tim has schizophrenia, his reality and truth will be very different from the other people in the car. I think that the theory that would have the broadest cultural applicability would be the person center therapy defined by Carl Rogers. I have a BSW (pending) in Social Work from Brockport which gave me a very solid basis for this Masters program. Writing this paper was a great refresher for me and I pulled many of my books from my BSW classes. I enjoy adding counseling theories to my developmental theorist from social work. My world view changed in a major way throughout my course work at Brockport. I also have a BA in Women and Gender Studies which played a part in choosing Adlerian psychotherapy. As I am introduced to more theory, I am calling on more and more of my social work background. I changed my goals for my career as I did not like working with groups of people.
