This theory is known for it’s emphasis on the spiritual dimension of people, as well as the fact that people change over time. In this approach people are able to create and discover their own identity, and it is for this reason that they are entirely in control of who they become. The pioneer of this theory is Abraham Maslow who differentiated deficiency needs (those things that people need to survive) and Being needs (things that give someone value and make them feel alive). One of the key distinctions is emphasis on the unconscious in Psychodynamic orientation, and the emphasis on the conscious brain in the Humanistic/Existential/Narrative Theory. This is significant because we are not able to control our unconscious mind whereas we are with our conscious mind.
