In his theory of sexual development, Freud explains that there are five stages, the third being the Phallic Stage that deals with sexual identification (Oswalt). It is within this stage where “Freud thought that children turn their interest and love toward their parent of the opposite sex and begin to strongly resent the parent of the same sex”, a theory he “called […] the Oedipus Complex” derived from the Greek tragedy dealing with king Oedipus killing his father and marrying his mother (Oswalt). Freud’s idea of children experiencing the Oedipus Complex as part of their sexual development provides evidence that the brothers’ strong resentment of their father leading up to the action of killing him and their previous desire to “touch” their mother, years before they killed her hints that there were in fact flaws in the brothers’ development. This provides further evidence of sexual abuse, since it could have had a lasting impact on their sexual development, and if the abuse occurred at all during the Phallic stage, then it is possible that they experienced the Oedipus complex, a natural part of sexual development, to an unusually high degree. Ultimately, Freud believed “that the way parents dealt with children's basic sexual and…
Psychoanalytical focuses mainly on the characters and what is going on internally and what their motivations are. It can also seek to understand the mind or intentions of the author. Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, presents a Psychoanalytical criticism outlook when reading all of the story. Huxley creates his own desires by writing the story this way so we are able to use psychoanalytical criticism when reading.…
Theories holding root in human development take the early human experience into unique consideration. Freud’s psychosexual theory is no exception. Freud details how different experiences, from infant suckling to adolescent sexual experimentation shape the life course of an individual (Newman, 30). By detailing the consequences of different developmental outcomes, Freud frames adult insufficiencies in light of childhood experiences. The context of these earlier experiences could serve to give new context to adult achievements and…
Lastly, numerous contemporary psychologists believe that Freud exaggerated the biological causes of conduct and urges and he provided a lack of acknowledgement to the relevance of the environment and education (Theorectical Perspectives on…
This research paper is written on infant and toddler development from birth to three years of age. I chose this topic to research because I am an aspiring Neonatal Intensive-Care Unit (NICU) Nurse. Neonatal nursing is a subspecialty of nursing that works with newborn infants that are born with a variety of problems right after birth (What Is Neonatal Nursing?). To successfully pursue this career, I must understand the process of birth, and how the infant develops. Pregnancy lasts for approximately 40 weeks, but it is possible to have the baby sooner or even later than the due date (Labor & Delivery, BabyCenter).…
Freud believes that all of the actions of the unconscious mind are driven by sexual desires. This is the most controversial belief because Freud goes on to say “ all infant males possess an erotic…
When I first outlined this project, I began by drafting a schedule that included all of my assignments for each class then broke down this research paper into weekly chunks that I could complete each week to ensure I was giving myself enough time to draft, complete, edit and re-edit before writing out the final copy. When I began thinking about the disorder I was going to research I narrowed my choice down to disorders I felt I was the most uneducated on to give me an unbiased edge, by doing this I knew it would also keep my interest peeked to continue. In the first week of researching I used a pad of paper and jotted down any key facts and supportive websites I thought would be of use or key facts that stuck out to me while reading journals…
1) Use my desk lamp for lighting more over the standard dorm lightning since I have a LED bulb in it and gives off ample brightness. -LED bulbs are by far more efficient than fluorescents since they give off more light than heat. These bulbs also seem to be much brighter and I find myself not being strained when I use it as a sole light source. Since my dorm room is already hot, it only seems smarter to use a light source that does not give off a ton of heat as well. Since I live in a single this seems like a viable solution since my room is very small and the desk light gives off sufficient light to illuminate the space.…
The quality of the relationship is reflected in how well the child progresses through the five stages of development. As adults, we tend to respond to people regarding to which of our early relationships they remind us of (a process called transference). Freud argued that children copy their parent's behaviour with the Oedipus complex and the Electra complex, which are both about falling in love with a parent, and resenting that parent's partner. The Oedipus complex is where the boy child falls in love with the mother, yet fears the father will castrate him if he falls out of line. The boy emulates the father to try and attract the mother, which eventually leads to the boy loving the father, in a way.…
“My stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter.” (Updike) this is the very last sentence in A&P by John Updike, it emphasizes the consequences when you let Id, and ego get too far and when your superego starts to kick in. In this short story psychoanalytic criticism is highlighted, It focuses on a work of literature as an expression in fictional form of the inner workings of the human mind. The theories about psychoanalytic criticism were developed by Sigmund Freud who is considered to this day to be one of the most influential scientists in psychology and psychiatry, he discovered, taught about the unconscious mind and psychological defenses, including denial, repression.…

The psychoanalytic theory “The divided self” by Rd Laing describes how everyone has multiple personalities that changes depending on the environment they are in. McMurphy from the novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is a prime example of someone with a divided self. He is placed in an environment that challenges and tests him as a person. As a result, he has created his own two personas each with their own goals and moral compass. Nurse Ratched, his main antagonist, knows about his personal problems and exploits it.…
