A relevant concept in psychoanalytic criticism is the archetype, which is a symbol or pattern that is constantly being used over time, also the concept of symbolism that means using other objects to represent ideas. Another important concept is fixation, when someone becomes obsessed with someone else or another object. In past 200 years we have evolved to using psychoanalytic criticism starting with the play Oedipus the King.

Sigmund Freud, psychoanalysis, was the first person to apply a different spin to psychoanalysis criticism. Freud introduced one of his most famous concepts using Oedipus the King. That concept is the Oedipus complex which is Freud’s way of explaining that everyone had a sexual desire for their mother and wanted to murder their father as a child between the ages of three and five.
