A drug is any substance other than food, that when inhaled, injected, smoked, consumed, absorbed via a patch on the skin or dissolved under the tongue causes a physiological change in the body. Drugs can be classified into two major categories; medicinal and psychoactive. Medicinal drug is a chemical substance used to treat, cure, prevent or diagnose a disease or promote well-being. On the other hand, psychoactive drugs are chemical substances that affect the function of the central nervous system altering perception, mood or consciousness. Psychoactive drugs are also considered as recreational drugs since they are used for pleasure rather than medicinal purposes. Drug abuse is a continued use of the psychoactive drugs or misuse of prescription or over-the-counter drugs not needed for therapeutic purposes which can either be intentional or involuntary. Drug abuse involves taking of the substance often in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended. It is also accompanied by a persistent desire or unsuccessful effort to cut down or control use of the substances. Causes of the drug abuse Most of the time, drug abuse starts with casual use. People don 't use drugs with the intention of getting addicted. It becomes habitual when one wants to feel energetic, self-confident and powerful.
