Psychiatry can be described as many things; helpful, supportive, beneficial, and much more… but what exactly is psychiatry? Psychiatry (not to get confused with psychology) is a medical practice that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses. Those who want to become a psychiatrist must go through years of medical school and residency to obtain an M.D.

Some of the duties and responsibilities of a psychiatrist would be to administer, and prescribe psychotherapeutic treatments and medicine to treat and prevent various mental disorders. These mental disorders can be from people of all ages. The disorders can range from anxiety disorders and social phobias to Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorders. A psychiatrist has additional duties and responsibilities such gathering information like patient records and the records of their families. Another task could be designing care plan treatments specific for the patient. As a psychiatrist, one must be able to work with other doctors and psychologists to discuss these treatment plans. A big part of being a psychiatrist is being able to analyze and evaluate a patient and diagnose them with the specific mental disorder. Although this may seem like hard work, according to Sokanu, this career has a culture that tends to be more laid back than most careers.
