Career Description
In the future I am going to be a psychiatrist for adolescents and children specifically in a mental hospital inpatient or outpatient. Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various abnormalities related to mood, behaviour, cognition, and perceptions. Initial psychiatric assessment of a person usually begins with a case history and mental status examination. Physical examinations and psychological tests may be conducted as needed. On occasion, neuroimaging or other neurophysiological techniques are used. Mental disorders are often diagnosed based off of criteria listed in diagnostic manuals such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual

I am definitely open to both options. Psychiatric treatments are way different compared to the past back then when people were hospitalised for long periods of time usually 6 months to multiple years but also people were admitted for falling from a horse at war, Asthma, jealousy etc.. now a days people receiving psychiatric treatment are more likely to be seen as outpatients. If hospitalization is required, the average hospital stay is around one to two weeks, with only a small number receiving long-term hospitalization. Psychiatric inpatients are people admitted to a hospital or clinic to receive psychiatric care. Some are admitted involuntarily, for things as broad as having a mental health condition, or as narrow as being an immediate danger to themselves and/or others. People may be admitted voluntarily if they decide themselves that they are a danger to themselves or others . Once in the care of a hospital, people are assessed, monitored, and often given medication and care from a multidisciplinary team, which may include physicians, pharmacists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatric nurses, clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatric social workers, …show more content…
In the very first appointment the psychiatrist does a evaluation and from then on there are Follow-up appointments with a focus on making medication adjustments, reviewing medication effects on the condition and you, considering the impact of other medical disorders on the patient's mental and emotional functioning, and counseling patients regarding changes they might make to be able to heal and rid of symptoms. The frequency with which a psychiatrist sees people in treatment varies widely depending on severity and stability of each person's condition. Many Psychiatrist have limited their practice to just prescribing the meds and talking about the meds but if I were to do outpatient work I would like to talk in depth with the patient about what they are feeling and what they are going through in each appointment to avoid having a middleman or an extra unnecessary

Patients in the psychiatric population on inpatient units often do not present with a stable health status. In one article, a person’s health is described as a continuous changing process of personal commitment that a person lives, incarnating his or her own value priorities (Carroll, K., Yancey, N., Doucet, T., Morrow, M., Wang, C., & Karnick, P, 2008). Some who enter the unit are depressed, have delusions, are drug intoxicated, or hallucinating, to name a few conditions. A common example would be a young male who enters the psychiatric unit under the influence of alcohol. As the patient became sober, he realizes his location and became agitated.…

Bellevue hospital in New York City is one of the country’s most famous psychiatric institutions, where over 7,000 patients are brought in and treated per year. Through this documentary you get to know a couple of the patients at the time of filming, and you get to see how they are treated. Majority of the patients are brought in by the police in handcuffs and showing aggressive behavior. All of the patients are medicated in some way, which isn’t something I entirely agree with.…

Often, assessments made by the intake worker and the nurse provide the basis for care. In most settings, the psychiatrist or advanced practice nurse evaluates the patient and provides orders within a limited time frame. Medical problems are usually referred to a primary care physician or specialist, who assesses the patient and consults with the unit physicians. To provide standardization in treatment and improve outcomes, inpatient units use clinical…

Background and Significance Decreasing resources for outpatient psychiatric services in the community have increased ER presentations of patients with psychiatric concerns. Many ERs are not equipped to assess patients with psychiatric problems, as a result a patient with psychiatric concerns can wait 12-24 hours in the ER for assessment, a practice known as boarding, which has been reported to cost hospital systems approximately $2,264 per patient on average. (Nicks & Manthey, 2012). This has can cause poor outcomes for patients who may leave without being clinically assessed, or may experience increased agitation and anxiety that is potentially detrimental both for staff and patients (Richardson, 2006, Weiss et al., 2012).…

Even if a person is mentally ill, that person's viewpoints, opinions and observations are still valid. I agree very strongly with this statement. There is a big stigma around people who are mentally ill, but that is the point, they are people like us just sick. It may not be the cold kind of sick, but the kind where they just don't think or feel the way society thinks they should. When you have a cold you take cough medicine and you get better, but when you have a mental illness it is a little bit different.…

5.2.1 Integrating Mental Health into Primary Care for Mild-to-Moderate Disorders The term “mild-to-moderate” is described as set of mental disorders such as depression and a range of anxiety disorders, panic disorders, phobias, somatoform disorders, eating disorders and ADHDs (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders)(OECD 2014) . Mild-to-moderate disorders are estimated to have high prevalence rate in OECD populations. Chapter three of Sociology of Mental Disorder discussed how some mental illnesses are caused and how psychopharmacology or other types of mental health systems can help alleviate some of the concern with the situation at hand. This chapter showed how prescription drugs and other methods help people who are suffering of mental issues cope with different types of therapy. Giving statements about how scientific exploration has proved some of these methods works, the chapter overall provides the knowledge to understand mental conditions and different treatment options that may be available to the patient in need. “The Medical Model” for instance, will treat a mental illness the same way a disease would be treated. Patients who have severe mental…

However, because of the benefits of technology, physicians, psychiatrists, and other healthcare professionals continue to anticipate the future of the field of health care (Bradley et al., 1999). Most importantly by pursuing perfectionism in the provision of health care services.
