Studies show that the use of social media and video games are more prevalent in the younger generations as they are exposed to technology at an earlier age than older generations. As explained by Andreassen in The Relationship Between Addictive Use of Social Media and Video Games and Symptoms of Psychiatric Disorders: A Large-Scale-Cross-Sectional Study, as you age the less technology you use (2016). Females are associated with addictive use of social media and males was associated with addictive video gaming.
Both males and females use social media and video games to avoid social interactions. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is identified more in the use of social media than video games (Andreassen, 2016). Per Adreassen, links the relationship between ADHD and social media, explaining individuals with ADHD are more distracted from their daily tasks when their phones beep. Anxious people as described by Andreassen are individuals that have difficulty communicating face-to-face, hence the reason they prefer to use social media to socialize with others (2016). Depression is the exact opposite. Social withdrawal is often a sign of depression, which is why depression is negatively associated with addictive social networking. Video games is one of the ways to alleviate depression as it gives the individual an escape. Andreassen explains that addictive video gamers have a difficult time engaging socially (2016). They use video games to escape to online gaming worlds and talk to virtual people rather than real people (2016).
