Treatment As of right now, there are no treatments that can change the outcome of this disease (Mayo Clinic, 2014). In the early and middle stages of the disease, medications can be given in small doses to help control the involuntary movements and to help control the depression and other psychiatric disorders that may come along with the disease (Johns Hopkins). In addition to drug therapies, there is psychotherapy, speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy.
Psychotherapy is when someone, whether it be a psychologist, psychotherapist, or clinical social worker will meet with the person to help them develop coping skills, manage their behavioral issues, help them to communicate with their family members and to help manage their expectations through the course of the disease (Mayo Clinic, 2014). With these implemented, it may help the sufferer to stay mobile, if possible, and reduce their risk of falls. Improved posture techniques can help to lessen how sever some movement problems may become. Once a walker or a wheelchair is needed, the physical therapist can give full instructions on how to use it and exercises to help their movements be better adapted to their new level of movement. An occupational therapist will assist the sufferer and their family to improve their at home life with decrease mobility.
