A 2003 study showed that marijuana can help reduce seizures. Robert J. DeLorenzo of Virginia Commonwealth University gave marijuana extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. The drug got rid of seizures for about 10 hours. CBD and THC control the seizures by binding brain cells that are responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation.
It may also be used to decrease the symptoms of a severe seizure disorder known as Dravet’s Syndrome. Dravet’s Syndrome is a disorder that causes seizures and severe developmental delays. Charlotte Figi, a 5 year old girl has Dravet’s and her parent’s treat her with a medical marijuana strain high in cannabidiol and low in THC. According to the film “WEED” the drug has decreased her seizures to 300 a week to just one every seven days. There are forty other children in her state who use the same strain to also treat their seizures. One of the more popular issues treated with marijuana is …show more content…
A study led by Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute suggests that marijuana can slow this disease’s progression. In the journal, Molecular Pharmaceutics, a 2006 study was published that found THC, the active chemical in marijuana, slowed the creation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that forms them. These plaques kill brain cells and cause this disease.
Multiple sclerosis is a very painful disease, but marijuana may be able to ease this pain. A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggest this. Jody Corey-Bloom studied 30 multiple sclerosis patients with painful muscle spasms. These patients previously didn’t respond to other treatments, but responded after smoking marijuana for a few days, and they were in less pain. The THC binds to brain receptors in the nerves and muscles, thus relieving pain.
Other types of muscle spasms may be helped with the use of marijuana. Gupta found a teen named Chaz, who had been using medical marijuana to treat his diaphragm spams that couldn’t be treated any other way, including very strong medications. Myoclonus diaphragmatic flutter, or Leeuwenhoek’s disease, causes constant spasming in the abdominal muscles, which are painful and interfere with breathing and speaking. The marijuana calms his attacks almost immediately and calms the diaphragm
