The article The Importance of Music Education written by Alexis Kalivretenos, a trumpet player with a Bachelors Degree in music education from the University of Maryland, is a compelling article that argues the importance of keeping music in the core curriculum of education systems across the nation. Kalivertenos uses a combination of ethos pathos and logos to argue that music should not only be kept in the curriculum but actually benefits the other subjects in the curriculum. Kalivertenos states that music has always taken a back seat to other core subjects such as math and reading. She backs this up with a ten-year study of high school students which states “students in music classes receive higher scores on standardized tests than students with little to no musical involvement.”…

The reasoning behind these ads is to persuade and argue why their product is more important than others. Sometimes these arguments can be used to persuade certain ideas that people think are right or wrong, and cause an argument socially, politically, or even religiously. This program should explain the consequences of drinking and driving, what to expect when a friend is too intoxicated to drive or what they should do when they are under the influence. The program should explain that when you get caught drinking that person will get a ticket or DUI,or a DWI and will be arrested, depending on the alcohol found in that person’s system and the officer giving the ticket. The ticket can be a very hefty fine, it could cost that person a lot of money that they probably do not even have. The DUI will cost even more money than a simple ticket. When a person gets a DUI they may have to attend a class where they watch videos of accidents and talk about that person actions.…

On page 32, I explained that I shared my background with students in hopes of connecting with them. I want to be clear that while this is something I normally do, I also was encouraged by Department Chair Dr. Kilolo Brodie to do so as a means to build relationships with students. Dr. Brodie shared with me she had her own issues with students when she joined the faculty. She explained that she overcame her student issues, sometimes at the expense of the course material, by spending a great deal of effort building rapport and relationships with students by sharing her background and even explaining to the students why she preferred to be addressed as Dr. Brodie (she compromised by allowing students to address her as Dr. Lo).…
