Psalm 22 and the Messiah Belcher describes Psalm 22 as “an individual lament (vv.1-21) with an expanded section of praise and thanksgiving for God’s answer of the lament (vv. 22-31).” Psalm 22 is a unique Psalm because of its strong connection to the final passion week of Christ’s life. James Luther Mays in “Prayer and Christology: Psalm 22 as Perspective on the Passion” states how strong the connection is: “There are thirteen (perhaps seventeen) Old Testament texts that appear in the passion narrative of the Gospels . . . Of the thirteen, nine come from the Psalms.…

In Psalm 139, David depicts God as molding his small body together in the haziness of this current mother's womb. God cherished David before he at any point existed. God composed the individual David was to be, and He conveyed that individual into being as per His foreordained arrangement. In this hymn, David utilized the fascinating illustration of a diary in which God first composed His arrangement and afterward brought that arrangement into fulfillment through His craftsmanship in the womb: "Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. Also, in Your book they all were composed (v.16) 7 David was molded by his radiant Father's adoration into an exceptional creation.…

Reading these three verses is like reading something from a Donald Trump biography. Verse 23 mentions that “a king will arise, insolent and skilled in intrigue”. If I were to announce Trump at an awards banquet, I could do worse than use that description as an introduction. He’d own up to every word. I address earlier how Donald, a name that means King of the World, knew he was born to be King.…

The Psalm compares God to a shepherd, meaning that God will show the same patience, protectiveness and compassion over his people as does a shepherd watching over his sheep. This image of God as a shepherd provides the Israelites with a sense of comfort that they can begin to trust in God for anything they need. The psalm also mentions that the Israelite people will “not lack” (Ps. 23:1) as long as faith is kept with God. “He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters” (Ps. 23:2) illustrates that God will only let his people sleep in safety and own fertile green land while leading them to water the people do not have to fight for, since the water is still. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil” (Ps. 23:4) showcases complete and faithful trust in God during hardships, symbolizing the calmness He brings as guiding presence.…

William Blake’s “The Lamb” paints a picture by using aspects of imagery of how “the Lamb” in the poem represents the Lamb of God, which is Jesus. Jesus is the son of God, who created everyone and everything. From the beginning of the poem, it is quite obvious there is a double meaning for “The Lamb”, that being the lamb’s physical attributes as a literal lamb and its spiritual meaning as Jesus. William Blake creates a sense of imagery by explaining to us the lamb’s nature, the nature of the Lamb of God, and God’s provision. The poem demonstrates the nature of the lamb as being mild, tender, defenseless, and immature.…

Psalm 143 is most widely known as being one of the seven Penitential Psalms. As Psalm 143 falls into this grouping, it also means that it is considered a lament of repentance. While there is not an obvious transgression that David, the writer of the Psalm, is begging for repentance for, it is clearly shown through his words that he needs God to intercede in his life and save him from his transgressions and predicaments. Through his imploring of God to save him, David does not lose hope—he still continues to praise God for the goodness he has done and will do. While, by the end of the psalm, the inflection has grown more optimistic, Psalm 143 still contains the vital ingredients of a lament.…
