Is the use of Prozac a psychiatric issue or a deeper existential problem? The above analyzed authors (except obviously Elliott) take it as a psychiatric phenomenon. They all take for granted the following presupposition: whenever one gets alienated from ones true self, feels inauthentic, not satisfied with herself or her life or she wants to fulfill herself or have a better life, she ought to change this condition. The question then becomes whether Prozac or psychofarmaceuticals in general are authentic tools of change or not. In what follows I willl try to show that regardless of the fact that we understand authenticity as self-discovery or self-creation, taking Prozac is a runaway rather than a solution.
