My parents felt as though I had strayed from the morals and values set forth by the family and our culture. I was involuntarily placed on a plane back to Nigeria to understand and experience what life was like on the other side. It was then that my true leadership skills began to surface. At this all girls boarding school senior students were elected for different responsibilities similar to what is commonly known as a student council. I was selected by the principal to be the official time keeper and elected by my peers to be the social prefect. As the time keeper, I was responsible for ensuring everyone woke up at 5am to prepare for class and daily duties. If I did not ring the morning bell, it was probable that school would be delayed. To understand the responsibility that weighed heavily upon me, you could consider me the human version of the school alarm clock. Being a young lady of leadership myself I felt it necessary to provide the young women of my district the training necessary to become a leader of tomorrow. I recalled the moment in my life when I realized that I was a person of importance and how that changed the way I carried myself and interacted with others. It would like to create this same moment for the young women in my club.
This is why I aspire to become a mathematics leader. The great words of my father still to this day read true in my head. “You must read, write and calculate!!!” He did not conform to the gender stereotypes that women only needed to read and write. Because of this I found my voice. With the leadership skills I will gain from attaining my PhD in Math education. I hope to find young women much like me who can also find their voice hidden in the subject they become discouraged to pursue and in doing so shall become an empire of strong unstoppable
