Ned Bugay wanted to show that he can be just as smart and strived to be a teacher. he was unlike other Navajo boys because he, “... read and studied and wrote, and [his] teachers noticed.” ( Bruchac 29). This really impressed his teachers and they began to change their mind. In indian school he was taught that white man know everything. He makes a life long friend with a white man who doesn't know much. By teaching his new friend to read he proved that “... white men are no different from navajos.” (Bruchac 67). Not only did he prove his teachers wrong that he will never be educated, he also used his ability to read and write to help a friend. In other words the theme of Code talker is rise to the challenge when others doubt you. Throughout the Story the theme was portrayed when; Ned was told his language is for no use and then it was used in the secret code, proved that the Navajos could do just as well as the other marines in battle, and showed how a Navajo could be educated and teach others.
