By doing this Achebe shows us the similarities and differences between the protagonist Okonkwo, and the other important characters Nwoye and Obierika. Nwoye, who is Okonkwo's son.“Causes his father great anxiety for hisincipent laziness” (page 13). Okonkwo tries to teach his son to be more hardworking but no matter how hard his dad tried it did nothing at all. Nwoye is more of a mommy’s boy, he is “more womanly” than Okonkwo because he likes the stories his mother tells him. “When a mother cow is chewing grass its young watch its mouth”(page 53). Okonkwo does not want to be like his father but yet he is, he follows in his dads footsteps by not being the father figure his son needs, and wants. Okonkwo and Nwoye end up trying to have very different lives than what there fathers had. Okonkwo has the opposite life of his father by being a “wealthy farmer” and being hard working. Nwoye has the opposite life by being closer to the missionaries, Okonkwo did not like the church, he strongly opposed of
