I asked John why he was putting so much pressure on himself in his senior year and he responded “Life is full of easy sometimes you need to challenge yourself and take some risks, that’s what I’m doing.”

We have witnessed John develop and grow not solely in academics at Providence but in character, intellectual integrity, and spirituality. He has gained the valuable trait of humility, recognizing that his peers offer important opportunities for learning as well as teachers and that listening is just as important as speaking. He has grown so much as an individual yet he remains true to himself and treads his

It was and will always be one of our best vacations. The visit included an educational tour of the Capitol and a visit with Mr. Gainer. John was in his glory as he is a big history fan. The highlight for John was not the fireworks or the tour as much as it was talking with Mr. Gainer and seeing his office. He shared information about what he did as Sergeant at Arms, being head of the Capitol Police and Illinois State Police and his start as a Chicago policeman. John asked questions, looked at the awards that covered his office walls and took it all in. He admired Mr. Gainer’s success and drive. If you were given the chance to experience the life as a Negro for a limited amount of time, would you? Most individuals wouldn’t want to because they probably have read many stories about how terrible the life of blacks is. However, John Howard Griffin was brave enough to come in contact with the black community. John decided that he was going to live his life as a black. Now, I abundantly disagree with the one critique when they say that Griffin didn’t receive the full reality of life as a Negro.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…
