I never was the most confident person when it came to competing. I always felt discouraged because I “knew” there would be people better than me. Towards the end of my junior year in high school a special program was announced to the students. “Doc Prep” was a weeklong trip to Baylor College of Medicine that gave ten students the opportunity to witness heart surgeries, practice suturing, handle human brains, and meet many interesting people. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this enriching experience?…
“Never give up and always keep fighting, because though times may be tough, the sacrifices do pay off, so just keep pushing towards your dream and just love it at the same time and enjoy it.” This quote by Gabrielle Douglas proves that she never gave up. Her whole childhood revolved around gymnastics. She started her career off at a young age and continued to excel each and every day. She ran into many obstacles along the way, but that did not stop her from becoming the best gymnast that she could possibly be.…
Power Tumbling, Trampoline Gymnastics Two years ago I made one of the best decisions of my life I started to do T&T(Tumbling and Trampoline). I came into this sport a lot later than most people do at the age of 15, but I picked it up rather quickly. I joined a competition tumbling team and competed very well in my first season competing.…
Throughout high school I trained gymnastics competitively at Go For It USA. During my senior year, I was given the opportunity to coach boys interested in joining the men’s team to train competitively as well. At first, the job seemed simple, but I soon realized that it was not just a matter of showing up and leaving. During my first day, I encountered some difficulties.…
I’m not the one you would probably notice on the floor, in the pool, or on the court. I started United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) when I was seven years old and every coach I had would tell me I’m not good enough. Maybe they were right, maybe I wasn’t good enough. I couldn’t get a split on the floor, and I didn’t have the strength to finish a simple bar routine and a vault. No one believed in me.…
If I could only select one interest to continue with, I would undoubtedly choose gymnastics. My last competition season is approaching fast and I cannot relinquish the practices after school, the meets, or the girls. I feel a strong connection between myself and gymnastics because I have done it for over 12 years and the people I have encountered have pushed my life in a postive direction. These personal encounters with people and with the sport have taught me life lessons that I cherish and apply to my everyday life. Teamwork, time management between work, practice, and school, and leadership are exquisite examples that this sport have given me.…
I've never been quite the athletic type. For as long i can remember, sports have never been my thing. I’d always been picked last or second to last, in PE. back then, my inner pre-teen self would “blame it on the baby weight” or that i hadn’t hit puberty yet. But deep down i knew it was it was because I had two left feet, one good eye, and butter fingers.…
I’ve been in gymnastics for ten years. I have known all the girls on the team for at least eight of the years and we are all very close. Over the years I have spent more time in the tiny, un-air conditioned garage with them than I have at home with my family. There’s been nights where we seemed unstoppable; getting new skills, joking around, singing at…
Moving to a new state, from the south to the east, was one of the largest changes in my life. Everyone would be different: my teachers, friends, and coaches. In fact, my parents' biggest worries were about gymnastics, as I never had difficulty making friends. They were mainly fretful about the coaches; after all, they would have the most impact on my attitude towards gymnastics. After arriving in Pennsylvania, we immediately searched for a gym.…
I was never the fastest competitor on the team, never the one with the lofty goal of achieving an Olympic medal, or compete at the international level. I wasn’t a natural by any means, but I knew how to work hard, and when I put in the effort and I could get results. I was in the upper quarter of finishers and finalists, winning some events, losing others. I was happy, and had fun competing in the sport, reveling my recently discovered realization – as long as I continued to work hard and dedicate myself to the sport, I could do well. I trained and…
Gymnastics was started by Ancient Greeks. Gymnastics was introduced by early Greek civilizations to facilitate bodily development. They did this through a series of exercises that included running, jumping, throwing, wrestling, and weight lifting. After Romans took over Greece, they made gymnastics into more of a formal sport. They used gymnasiums to physically prepare their men for warfare.…
The crowd is watching intensly as the gymnast soars over the vault and scores a perfect 10.00. The crowd goes wild! Gymnasts have to work hard to accomplish the difficult tasks of competing at gym meets all over the world. It takes a strong commitment and a positive attitude to become a competing gymnast. Gymnasts train for many hours of the week, the risk of injury is very high, but the rewards are worth it.…
In gymnastics, the physics involved in energy, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and angular momentum each contribute immensely to being successful in the Olympics. Learning how to master these physical science concepts can aid in becoming a strong olympic gymnast. To begin, there is the running start; this is where energy plays a major role. During a gymnast’s running start for a vault, she gains kinetic energy, which is, simply put, the energy of motion. Looking at the equation for kinetic energy (KE = (½) mv^2), you can see that the more velocity produced during the gymnast’s initial run, the more kinetic energy she will have for the rest of the vault.…
Last year, before school started, my friend convinced me to join the tennis team. Even though I had never picked up a racket in my entire life, never hit a tennis ball, and didn’t even know that it was a legit sport, I decided to give it a try. I absolutely fell in love with the sport; it has taught me so much about myself. My first year, I played exhibition, I wasn’t in the lineup, but that’s where I aspired to be. I promised myself I would come back next season a whole new person and the second time around I would be in the lineup.…
Radi: You probably do not know this about me but, I am from a small village in Ohio where I started gymnastics at the Licking County YMCA at the age of three. When I was eight I was in my first year of level five and we were told by the coaches that that was as good as I'll ever be. So having been doing private lessons with the gym I moved to (Champion Gymnastics and Cheer) for a year we finally made the decision to officially move gyms at the end of the competition season. I then competed one year of level five and one meet of level six.…
