Prototyping Unit: Self Analysis

Improved Essays
As the class finishes up the prototyping unit, I think about my personal experiences during the planning, prototyping, and creation of my media charging stand. A few changes were made along the way to a successful project, but overall, I am happy with the outcome. I will walk you through my thought process and experiences as I applied my skills (or lack thereof), while we worked in the wood shop.

At the beginning of the unit, we were presented with a problem. We had to design a few sketches of a cell phone charging stand that we would eventually bring to life in the wood shop. I immediately realized a problem in my life that could be solved. I always lost my earbuds or got them tangled up in a drawer somewhere, so I decided to put a way

Where were each of the tools located? Where was the emergency stop button? After I got myself situated with the room, I was handed a beautiful piece of wood. I started by pulling my hair back and walking over to the Radial Arm Saw, and cut my wood into a smaller piece, making sure my feet were properly anchored and the majority of the wood was to my left. I powered on the machine, and after hearing its content hum,and slowly pulled the blade forwards, rocking it back and forth as I went. After that I approached the Planer, and powered it up and ran it through, being careful of my fingers. The wood got stuck a bit, but with a light push, it went through fine without putting too much stress on the machine, revealing two smooth sides. I then turned around to face the Jointer, where I placed my left hand in a “three point” formation and, using my right hand as a pushing force, straightened out one of the end grains of my wood. Then came the Table Saw. I planted my feet firmly, placed my left hand on the edge of the wood, my right on the top of my piece, and cut the wood to my desired width. After a quick trip to the Jointer, where I cleaned up the edge I just cut on the Table Saw, I venture over to my final step, the Mitre Saw. I placed the wood firmly against the fence, planted my feet and hands appropriately, and finished processing my piece of wood. The came the sanding process, alternating between grits to get

A Pilot G-2 pen guarantees immediate results by a single appliance of pressure by one’s fingers but the pen this office need is far more advanced than an individual effort. What’s great about this pen is that a problem exists (it doesn't work!), subconsciously calling out our desire to fix what’s wrong. And unlike the Pilot G-2, this pen utilizes a collaborative approach to innovation. In a multi-step dynamic, we can make this pen works by disassembling the parts, refilling the empty tube with new ink, and reassembling it back together. This pen embodies the office’s attitude on finding creative solutions to the needs of the students that ASUC represents which is why this is the pen you need to help realize that great action is not made by…

I am applying to graduate school to explore how best to physically implement computation and how best to pass on what I learn to others. As physical devices get pushed to their limits, new design paradigms have begun to emerge across the spectrum of hardware architectures. This spectrum spans from prominent software-programmable devices, such as many-core CPUs and modern GPUs, to hardware-programmable technologies such as FPGAs. I am fascinated with the design challenges inherent in these and other types of devices and want to contribute to meeting these challenges. My eventual goal is to share what I learn with others, as a professor.…

In today’s world, phones play a major part in life. For many, going without a phone is equivalent to living completely isolated, which Thoreau did when he spent two years living alone at Walden Pond. For me, going to a technology free sleep away camp for seven weeks was a similar to Thoreau’s experience. Through his time alone, Thoreau learned to live in the moment, focus on what he was doing instead of the rest of the world, and reflect more on himself, all which is shared in his story Walden. Thoreau was able to live in the moment without the constant reminder of what others were doing, which is unachievable with a phone.…

What lies in the bottom drawer is a device so powerful—no—so dangerous, that it had to be hidden once it reach completion. It's been many years since she dared to gaze upon the device in fear of someone with nefarious intentions stumbles upon its dwelling place. Falling to her knees, she ignores the burning of her nose as she stirs up dust and cobwebs, and reaches for the desk handle, inching it open just enough for her to see the black metallic gleam on the small, circular device. Her finger grazes the top of the device, silently noting how cold it is, but she tears her eyes away a moment—just to catch a glimmer of the outside world through the long over arching window in her bedroom— to watch the falling white snowflakes coat the world in a blanket of perfection,…
