According to The Guardian, 196 African Americans were killed by United States Police Officers this year. This year’s list includes Alton Sterling, an African American male age 37 who was fatally shot on July 5, 2016 by police outside of a convenience store. According to police reports Alton Sterling was shot because he was said to be selling CD’s and armed.
“I feel as if we are moving backwards with the civil rights of individuals in America,” said CCNY Graduate student Kai Simmonds.
The protest against police brutality is an epidemic that still affects us today. There is clearly a divide between the African American community and the police for decades. How evolved as a country are we really in regards to racial unity? If protests from today like the Black Lives Matter movement which stemmed from the police shootings from Ferguson and Baltimore, seems just as similar as it 1992 Riots also known as the Rodney King Riots coming from LA after police used excessive force on an African American male.
