About eight out of every ten men develop an enlarged prostate, making the condition very common among men. About eight out of every ten men develop BPH, with the symptoms affecting the quality of life of 30 percent of this number. Although harmless, BPH can be very painful for sufferers and can cause continued prostate growth and complications like UTI, acute urinary retention, bladder infection, bladder stones and even kidney damage. Some studies also suggest that the causes of BPH may somehow be related to prostate cancer.

The cause of BPH is unknown but it is believed to be hormone-related. As men age, the production of the hormones estrogen and testosterone increases. High levels of estrogen and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – an element testosterone is converted into – may promote the growth of prostate cells, therefore enlarging the gland.

BPH cannot be prevented, but you can lessen the risk of developing the condition by exercising regularly, eating healthy, and getting an annual PSA blood test and digital rectal exam by age 50. High risk males such as African-Americans and those with family history should begin testing by age
