Prostitution: The Three Pros And Cons Of Prostitution

Prostitution is a very controversial topic. We often define “prostitution” as a degrading and a low-skilled job. However, we tend to forget maybe they were victims of human trafficking or they had no other option but to become sex workers. Moreover, some sees prostitution as an empowerment and financially stable job. Government legalizing prostitution would benefit the population because it can regulate the spread of disease and giving “sex workers” the freedom of what they want to do with their body, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. But it can also promote prostitution and society would not respect the individual rights of women. “Paradigm” means different theory on a specific subject, in this case, sex industry. Ronald Weitzer interprets three different types of paradigm of how people view sex workers, whether they are doing it because of empowerment, or because they were forced into it. The first paradigm Weitzer introduced is the Empowerment Paradigm. Sex workers see sex industry as a job they enjoy and helpful towards others and not dirty or demeaning. They feel like they are doing this because they can boost their self-esteem, fulfilling their satisfaction, and empowerment. Hence, there are pros and cons in legalizing prostitution. As of right now, number of places have legalized prostitutions and have regulations. Netherlands is one of them. Although it is legalized, the city of Amsterdam wanted to end the abuse in the sex industry, therefore changed the law and banned brothels. Now, it is only legal to employ only prostitutes who are over the age of consent, and wish to do the work willingly. Additionally, stricter measures have been utilized under the criminal law as a part of request to prevent exploitation. Another place where prostitution is legalized is
