Decriminalization Of Prostitution

One of the most controversial topics in Canada and the oldest profession for that matter is Prostitution. Prostitution is the practice or occupation of engaging in a sexual activity with someone for money or other valuable things. Although there are many different forms of prostitution, the two main categories are indoor and street prostitution. An indoor prostitution includes, conducting sexual activity at the client’s house, hotel room, or any other indoor places. Where the other form of prostitution is called street prostitution, where customers are solicited on the streets or park or any other public places for that matter. By criminalizing prostitution, there will be many consequences for the prostitutes. For example, Gary Ridgeway, a serial killer confessed of killing more than 71 women, most of them whom were prostitutes with the others being runaway pick-ups. He called his killing spree “his career”, and said that he was “good in one thing, and that’s killing prostitutes”. Furthermore, Gary Ridgeway also explained that the reason of killing prostitutes rather than people with other occupations. During his plea, he admitted of choosing to target prostitutes because they were an easy pick and as the authorities wouldn’t notice them gone missing, “I picked prostitutes because I thought I could kill as many of them as I wanted without getting caught," (Gary Ridgeway). Thus, if prostitution were to be criminalized, prostitutes from all over the world will face these sorts of consequences for practicing their job. Thus, by decriminalizing prostitution, the law will provide protection for the prostitute where they will be able to practice their occupation without any fear, and it will keep away people like Gary Ridgeway from targeting
