Prostitution In The United States

The current U.S. debt of twenty trillion dollars worries numerous Americans as it appears to only grow each passing day. Reducing or paying off the national debt is an extremely difficult affair as cutting funding appears to be the only option for the United States’ government at the moment. The decision of cutting funds from healthcare, national security, social security, and multiple other programs affects the U.S. population in a highly negative manner. Nonetheless, such actions have been taking and are currently being taken by the government in order to slow down the rate of increase of the U.S. national debt. However, there are other methods of decreasing and eventually paying off the debt that would not impair the nation. Prostitution has been a massive industry in countries and cities where it has been decriminalized. The tax revenue coming from legal brothels have been a major source of income and it has created more opportunities for the unemployed. The only place in the United States where prostitution is currently legalized is in the state of Nevada in certain cities and counties. In an article written by Annie Lowrey, she explained that, “one Lyon County official, for instance, told an NBC affiliate the county raises $300,000 to $500,000 per year from the local brothels” (2-3). This data collected from one county in Nevada demonstrates that money made from legal prostitution is significant. This information only applies to one county which is not the entirety of the city. This money could be used to pay debts and eventually generate jobs outside of the sex industry as cities would have a broader budget to invest city development.
