Prostitution In The Bible

Great Essays
In contemporary society, prostitution is dealt with less harshly than in the Bible. In fact, Brazil, Mexico, France, Germany, Israel, and Italy have all legalized prostitution. (Norton-Wright). Yet in the United States of America, prostitution is only legal in the state of Nevada. As for the biblical context, prostitution was aways deemed as a wicked sin and was not tolerated. I chose to write my term paper about prostitution because of the stark contrast between the view of prostitution in the biblical context to the view of prostituion in the contemporary context. I was curious about where the harsh condemnation of prostitution stemmed from. In this paper, I will argue that throughout the Bible, prostitution is continuously seen as wicked …show more content…
It does not take long for God to condemn any type of sexual relations outside of marriage. In fact, in the very first book of the Bible, God’s intentions are made clear that sex has the sole purpose of binding a married couple. “Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24. Alluding to how Eve is from the flesh of Adam, this verse states that once a husband and wife engage coitus they become one “flesh” or person. Thus, prostitution breaks the sacred act of a married couple becoming one through the numerous and non-committal sexual relations that occur through prostitution. By having sexual relations with multiple people, prostitutes and those who engage with them go against God’s intentions for his people to become one with a single spouse. Sex is for uniting monogamous spouses and prostitution does the exact opposite since the sexual relations often involve multiple partners who may be wed. Since the very beginning of the Bible, prostitution has been immoral since it breaks the sacredness of sexual relations in …show more content…
As seen through the Ten Commandments, God makes it clear to his people that any type of sexual promiscuity while one married is a sin. God declares, “You shall not commit adultery” Exodus 20:14. Adultery is committed when a person who is married has sexual relations with one who is not their spouse. Thus, it is likely that adultery could be committed through the act of prostitution since one participant may have been married. Thus, if one is married and participates in prostitution they commit adultery and thus break one of the Ten Commandments- a serious trespass since it directly breaks a rule that God has directed his people to abide

Therefore, this paper claims sex as honorable, pleasurable, and paradisal; and it is great sex when it is mutual, reciprocal, exclusive, and uninhibited. I shall prove this by a heterarchical interpretation of Genesis 1:26-31 and 2:18-24 and commenting on the literal interpretation of the Song of Songs with focus on both texts’ theology of sensuality and…

Prostitution The Victorian era was infamous for its adultery. This may be due to the fact that some people believed that venereal diseases could be cured by sexual meeting with children. This is why most adultery during this time were no other than children. Since prostitutes made a large sum of money, it was the number one reason that women had adultery. Another reason women went into adultery was because other jobs for women were limited and didn't make nearly as much money.…

In the article “What is Wrong with Prostitution, Pateman argues that prostitution is a form of patriarchy and she attempts to support her argument by referring to the history of how women were treated as housewives. Essentially, she claims that prostitution is merely a way for men to temporarily claim ownership against women. In my opinion, I would disagree with this claim since prostitutes have the autonomy to choose who their clients will be and have the right to refuse any form of sexual activity that may not fall under their likings. Pateman also claims that prostitution is not similar to other forms of jobs. To elaborate, in a typical job, the employer is paid on the basis of what they produce through labor, whereas prostitutes are paid…

In her article, Karras analyzes what being a prostitute in medieval times meant. Prostitutes could have been people who rather than sell than their bodies for money, do other sinful things such as bask in “pride and “beauty,” instead of “greed” or “lust (12)”. According to Karras, a “whore” could be “a promiscuous woman, one who earned her living by selling sexual favors or simply one whose sexual morals the speaker wished to impugn (5).” Karras, through this article, is helping readers to understand, just how scrutinized women were when it came to purity and morals during the Medieval Ages. Karras’ article further supports the notion of women as deceivers of the Church that is widely coming up throughout research for this paper.…

(Keire 7, 2001) Reformers changed the way that they were approaching prostitution from sin to economic analysis and this led them to be able to gain more support from the public. When they did this, the amount of support skyrocketed. Prostitution was illegal in most states at this time, but it was not enforced by the police and therefore, could go unharmed. Chicago was one of the main cities to take up against prostitution, causing all of their brothels to close down in 1912.…

This is evident because in Hebrews 13:4, it is declared, “Let marriage be honorable among all, and the marriage bed be without defilement, for God will judge fornicators and adulterers.” This ideal has shifted and warped over the past decades, but it shows how prevalent The Catholic Church was in everyday life and ideals. Catholicism despised everything but itself, so it encouraged others to do the…

Christianity originated in the first century Roman Empire, and often their senses of right or wrong put them at odds with the power of the government. In this empire there was not a sharp dichotomy between heterosexuality and homosexuality and therefore, the government was not interested in regarding the morality of prostitution or pedophilia. Paul wrote to people living in that world, “… the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men … will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were.…

Disregarding God’s design and plan for human relationships, their relationships with each other became distorted and perverse. Paul says, “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.” (Romans 1:26-27) God’s perfect design for sex is naturally between a man and a woman.…

Prostitution is one of the oldest profession, not just to the United States, but worldwide, and the persecution of sex workers is just as old. With the popularity of prostitution, religious groups fought to guarantee that the United Sates outlawed the soliciting and offering of sex for money by the early 1900’s. This still remains the case to today in all states of the United States, with the exception of the state of Nevada. Nevada has legalized prostitution in counties with a population of fewer than 400,000 persons and the laws permit prostitution mostly by accepting the brothels and sex workers not necessarily condoning it. Throughout society, we do not view prostitution as universally moral. Typically, women who have chosen to sell themselves for sex are seen as ‘sluts’ or ‘whores’. However, men who have chosen this life for themselves are praised for their masculinity and the number of women they have slept with. Kantianism clearly explains that if it is wrong on one side of the spectrum to proceed in this act, in this example women, then it must be equally immoral for men to…

What we understand to be true about sexuality begins to ingrain itself in our person since the time we are born. At a young age, our parents influence our beliefs on sexuality by teaching us what is right or wrong for our gender. Over time, our peers and the media contribute to our understanding of our own sexuality as well as others’ sexuality. We are taught and socialized to follow societal norms or otherwise be faced with the possibility of being viewed negatively by others. Impositions by one 's society and culture aid in determining our attitudes towards sex and the perceived role of sexual activity in individuals.…
