Cocaine and Booze consumed Charlotte’s life. If she wasn’t high, she was drunk. Relying on drugs and alcohol to make it through each day, her parents kicked her out at age 16. Nowhere to go she roamed the streets of Chicago, wasting all of her savings on drugs. After two days of living alone, Charlotte was broke, starving, and desperate for a high. An older man around the age of 45 could clearly tell Charlotte was in withdrawal and he took advantage.
“Do you need drugs? Because I can help you out with that.”
“Yes.” She quickly replied.
“I have a few friends inside that bar over there that’ll give you cocaine if you perform exactly as they say. Walk into the back room and they’ll be waiting.”
Charlotte trudged into the bar knowing what

Charlotte’s story is viewed as prostitution where Aretta’s story is classified as sex trafficking. What’s the difference? Prostitution is known to be the voluntary act of engaging in sexual activity where sex trafficking is forcing a woman to engage in sexual activity. Now, Charlotte chose to prostitute where Aretta was forced into it. Prostitution and sex trafficking might be viewed as opposites, but in reality they aren’t much different. They share the same concept of dehumanizing women. When someone is dehumanized they are stripped of their humanity and basic civil rights. It’s common to be belittled or treated as an animal or object. Whether you are considered a prostitute or a victim of sex trafficking, both titles involve selling your body and being dehumanized. In both circumstances, the woman gets treated like property that is to be bought and sold.
Thousands of victims similar to Charlotte and Aretta are desperate for their life back. They’re desperate to stop being dehumanized and treated as property. It’s long overdue to treat victims like a valued person in our

My only knowledge stemmed from the Taken movies which took place in Europe so I never thought of sex trafficking personally affecting me. But the other night, I was driving down Burnside and to my left I glanced at a young girl waiting for the bus. Short, blonde hair tied back in a ponytail, blue jeans and a zip up jacket sitting on the bus bench. I slowly drove by and started thinking what a girl around 15 years of age was doing waiting for the city bus all by herself at 8pm at night. She very well could have been coming home from soccer practice or on her way home from dinner. But, with my mind full of research on sex trafficking she also very well could have been coming home from visiting a customer. She didn’t portray any stereotypical prostitute characteristics like

The reading from the textbook titled, Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitution in the Era of Aids, by Claire E. Sterk, is also an intro to the book by the author with the same title. The fieldwork is based in New York City and Atlanta in the 1980s, describing the daily life of prostitutes from their own perspectives. In her book she goes over the techniques she used to observe these women in their communities. The research that Sterk conducted on female prostitution and the struggles they may face, was very critical to the trade and the general awareness of the public. Her work is revolutionary because it shuts down the common beliefs on why women become prostitutes, and she wrote in a style that made her research more accessible to…
