What the Meaning of the Word “Is” Is. Trevor Getz’s and Liz Clarke’s Abina and the Important Men takes place along the Gold Coast of Africa in the late 1870’s after the proscription of slavery in the British colonies. This graphic novel predominantly follows a court case in which the titular character Abina Mansah accuses Quamina Eddo of subjecting her to slavery. Through a misrepresentation of slavery and a misplaced sense of personhood, the court rules Eddo not guilty of the accusation of slavery. This decision not only exemplifies the era’s complacence with oppression, but also the ethically corrupted motivations underpinning British imperialism that would later influence racist policies in other Western countries and promote a false understanding genetics.…

eo is the son of Hephaestus and the mechanic of the Argo II (a ship capable of sea and land travel, not a sequel to a hit Ben Affleck flick). Leo somehow manages to have both the simplest and the most complex motivation. What a bundle of demigod contradictions. His main goal is to return to Calypso, a girl he fell in love with on the island of Ogygia, "an island that no man ever found twice (9.61).…

The advent of slavery has been deeply rooted in American history for a long time. From the time African slaves were set foot in Virginia, the North American colony of Jamestown in 1619, slavery has been utilized to establish the economic foundations of the American nation. The African slaves were perceived as a cheaper source of labour in comparison to the poorer Europeans who were procured as indentured servants. Since the indentured servants were later to earn their freedom, African slaves were highly preferred for their lifetime service or till their master set them free.…

After being deceived by his brother and cast away to an island, Prospero was able to apply his knowledge and gain experience. Caliban urges his comrades to “ first possess his books; for without he’s but a sot, as I am, nor hath not one spirit to command” (The Tempest, p.53). The strict tone of “first possess his books” exemplifies how Prospero gains the knowledge of magic from his books, but only when he applies his knowledge is he able to command spirits and pose a threat to Caliban. When Miranda and Ferdinand see each other for the first time they instantly fall in love and Prospero reveals, “It goes on, I see, as my soul prompts it” (The Tempest, p.23).…

Thus Caliban, however, is not even offered freedom and is instead kept under Prospero’s control even at the very end of the play. While Ariel obeys Prospero for the eventual acquisition of freedom, Caliban obeys Prospero for his own survival. Caliban’s inability to truly decide his own future is further displayed by the fact that he himself rarely gets to fulfil the ten syllable rule of the iambic pentameter present in Shakespeare’s works. Instead his lines are quite often finished by a different character, for…
