Many high schools also have mascots such as, the warriors, the Indians, and the braves. In one of our future readings, we look into Wisconsin Public Schools statement regarding the removal of their Indian mascot. The school district decided that the mascot promoted institutional racism and abused the cultural dress and ceremonies. While some may argue that the sports teams are fighting bravely like the Native American who fought in battle, the school district felt that the warriors died tragically much unlike the athletes playing in sporting events (Munson, 1997). In conclusion, it is of hope that other students will realize how degrading mascots are to a Native American. This culture has been subject to so much hidden hate that I feel many of the facts presented to the students will be of surprise. As we have discussed previously in class, often times we are unaware of what is going on around us unless it is taught to us in school or talked about among our peers and families.
