Technology is at its golden age. Technology tycoons such as Steve Jobs paved the way for more modern technologies in the form of smartphones, tablets, better-operating systems and a vast array of products that are in use today. By definition technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Amongst the most popular technologies, social media is one of the volatile technologies. Social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram and many more not only bring families and friends together but also are the prime media for bullying. Although, technology makes life a breeze it has many drawbacks.

A smartphone can be viewed as a mini computer. It has all the functions that a computer has. Smartphones have GPS, social media apps, calendar, email apps, weather apps and many more features. At the same time, smartphones are affecting student’s writing and grammar skills. While texting, teens avoid grammar and use abbreviations. According to CJ Cotter, the author of “How Texting Can Affect Grammar”, “Texting in its nature, shuns grammar…people…lose punctuation, sentence structure, and capitalization.” Teens nowadays are constantly texting. As a result of the prolonged exposure to texting, teens have trouble writing essays and papers. According to Swayne and Messer, “Text messaging…could lead to declining language and grammar skills…” Also, student Margarete Stettner confessed in a USA Today article, “[Texting] does affect, sometimes, how I do my schoolwork…I do put, instead of Y-O-U, I put a U” (qtd. in Cotter).
