Pros And Cons Of Year-Round School

Other ways schools are trying to improve grades besides start times is setting the school year up differently. One way you can set up the school year differently than the normal nine month long year and three month summer vacation is by having year round schooling. With year round schooling, school is still in session for one hundred and eighty days each year, but it is more spread out. A common way it is done is by attending school for forty five days at a time and having fifteen day breaks in between. Other ways you can do it is go to school for ninety days and vacation for thirty days in between, or go to school for sixty days and vacation for twenty days (Research). Also with year round schooling there is a system where if the school is a single track school then the whole faculty and student body are in school at the same time. If a school is known as a multi-track school then that means some students and teachers are in school while others are on vacation (Yeager). With block scheduling you have less class periods in the day, just longer ones. Sometimes they change every other day and other times they change every few weeks (Walker “Are Block”). A big pro with block scheduling is that it allows for more in depth learning and gives teachers the opportunity to engage students (Walker “Are Block”). Other pros are that it slows down the pace of the school day and lightens the homework load which takes some stress off of the students. Concerns that people have about it is it that kids will not be able to focus for that long and if they miss one class they will be further behind than normal (Walker “Are Block”). I understand why schools would consider changing to block schedule or year round schooling, but I feel it is better to stick with the traditional school
