Pros And Cons Of Value-Based Purchasing

Frist of all, value-based purchasing (VBP) connects provider payments to improved performance by health care workers, and this form of payment holds health care providers accountable for both the cost and quality of care they provide. It also attempts to reduce inappropriate care and to identify and reward the best-performing providers. In addition, the Hospital value-based purchasing (VBP) program is a center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) initiative that rewards acute-care hospitals with incentive payments for the quality care provided to Medicare beneficiaries. Moreover, the original VBP concepts were published as pay for performance (Raso, 2013).
Furthermore, the VBP has many pros and cons. Some of the pros of the VPB according to (Raso, 2013) including as the fallowing: It addresses the importance of team work and improvement of patient safety and outcomes. It also reports that people need to know the data, share the results as well as the financial impact, and use them as a lightning rod for change. Investigate every failure and learn from it. Monitor concurrently and provide feedback to responsible parties at every staff and leadership level.

There are research links to nurse staffing levels and patient outcomes, which can provide some evidence-based support. Finally, there are several pros and cons of VBP that includes inappropriately assign accountability to physicians and hospitals for services they did not deliver and cannot control, while at the same time failing to hold healthcare providers accountable for many of the services they do deliver. Generally, identifies which services might be changed in order to achieve the same or better outcomes for patients at a lower cost because sometimes no distinctions are made between necessary and avoidable
