Pros And Cons Of Transgender Bathrooms

Transgender Bathrooms - The Current Fight for Equality With the new law in North Carolina stating that you can only use public restrooms that match your birth gender, the public has now latched onto a national debate of whether or not trans people can use the bathroom they identify with. This topic is being hotly discussed as the fear of rape and assault is commonly brought up to as why these sort of laws make sense. In this day and age, this is just another battle for equality. Transgender people should be able to use whichever restroom they identify with, not with what genitalia they were born with. If anything, these new laws sprouting up have hurt innocent people rather than helping them. Most recently, a woman in Connecticut was harassed in a Wal-Mart restroom just because she looked transgender (Golowski 2016). This type of fear mongering can be dangerous since you cannot pick out transgender people from the rest of the population. Their bathrooms are open for those in the trans community to choose which restroom to use in accord with their gender identity. Target goes onto say on their website that, “We believe that everyone—every team member, every guest, and every community—deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally. Consistent with this belief, Target supports the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals, and opposes action that enables discrimination” (Target 2016). Target also provides single stall restrooms for not only transgender people, but also families, dads with daughters, mothers with sons, people working with disabled citizens. These bathrooms not only protect the privacy of those who are transgender, but also provide a safe environment for human functions without discrimination and embarrassment by more than just the transgender
