Pros And Cons Of Traditional Police Department

The article discusses the managerial style of many police departments called COMPSTAT, or “Management by Inquiry” (DeHaven- Smith and Jenne II, 2006), and how it applies to large companies in the private sector. The article compares this philosophy with the more traditional managerial styles. The article goes into the pros and cons of each, but I will show my experience with both related to my field of law enforcement.

The traditional model is the setting goals and being proactive to reach the goals set forth. Resources are allocated to whatever the goal may be (traffic stops, high crime areas….etc.). Some issues that may arise is adapting to crime trends and goals that change throughout the timeframe. If the goal is attained, is there a goal
