“And your 2016 varsity basketball captains are….Abbey Battaini, Alison Grise, and Jordyn Poole.” I felt my heart sink to my stomach. This was a feeling I have never felt before. Why was my name not called? Is this real life? I slowly walked out as I felt so ashamed in front of a room full of laughter and smiles. I never really believed in the words “heartbroken” but this feeling was not normal, I felt my heart breaking into little pieces. I was heartbroken. The sport I had so much passion for was now turned into something I dreaded playing. I felt so stupid, like a fool, I got my hopes up just for them to fall down leaving me with nothing. When I walked out of the room, tears streamed down my face. My mother following after, tried to make me feel better by telling me how much of an incredible person and player I am, but nothing seemed to help. The words she said went in one ear and directly out of the other. Although they probably would have been beneficial, I was in too much pain to listen. My best friend, Alison who was just named captain, came in after. She asked my mother to please leave so she could talk to me. I was so angry, not at her, but I was angry. Maybe I was jealous, I don’t know, but I didn’t want to listen to her either. The thought of being by myself seemed a lot better than having …show more content…
Of course it did, but I had to leave my pride behind me and put my big girl pants on. I realized that it did not matter that I didn’t get named captain, it matters how I react to it. If I let it bother me, it shows that I’m not strong and I let them get to me. Not getting captain didn’t leave me with nothing, it left me with the drive to finish out my senior year of basketball stronger than ever. It left me with the motivation to work harder than any other season. This year, I am going to lead my team to a successful, enjoyable and memorable season. Although I’m not a captain, it doesn’t mean that I can’t be the leader that I know I can

Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade.
