Assignment 4.2: The California Constitution and Progressive legacy
The Progressive Movement was focused on making the “government more responsible to the political, social and economic concern of the people”. The progressive movement changed California forever. Hence, the progressive movement started from 1900 to 1917. They only had three ambitious on their agenda, there plan was to attack corporate political influence, struck down political corruption and democratize the current political process.
There were five significant reforms during the Progressive Movement. The first reform was Non-Partisanship, which “no party label is affixed to the candidate names on the ballot”. This reform prohibits the partisanship of political interest with …show more content…
It was changed in 2010, but the principle remains the same. The system was replaced by top two, instead of choosing their nominee through primary elections, the top candidates must proceed to the November runoff. The best candidates will win regardless of their party. I find it a little bit strange that someone would compete with their party.
Here are the pros and the cons of the use of initiatives in today. Hence, initiatives can be use as direct democracy. This is important for the people because they can participate in public affairs. For example, if there is an issue, they can address by exercising their vote. The initiative can give the power to the citizens, to decide which policy works best for them. In addition, initiative can help shape the government by passing their own laws. On the other hand, initiative are dangerous because they can mislead the audience. For example, if a ruthless person gathers all signatures necessary to qualify for the ballot. He will try to persuade other people to vote for his policy. This can become a problem because perhaps, the person trying to ban gambling in all casinos. Moreover, initiatives are unconstitutional, it violets the Bill of Rights.
