NBA Playoff System Flawed The playoff system in which I believe is flawed is the National Basketball Association’s playoff structure. The NBA’s current playoff system is an elimination tournament between 16 of the NBA’s best teams that then lead to a final match to win the Larry O’Brien trophy. “The way these 16 teams qualify for the playoffs is by playing 82 regular season games between the end of October and Mid-April.”1 At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams in the Eastern and Western Conference go through to the playoffs. The teams are then seeded during the playoffs. For example, the best record team in the Western Conference goes has first round matchup against the playoff team within the same conference with the worst record. Once a team has won four games, the first round is over. There is then a second round following the first and then comes the Conference Finals. It also allowed there to be a higher criteria when making the actual playoffs due to the decrease in the number of teams. Looking into the actual scheduling of games such as when the season starts and ends can actual make an impact on the overall NBA playoff format. Currently, the season starts on a Tuesday, and it also ends on a Wednesday. The second round beings on a Saturday. Rearranging the season start day from a Tuesday to Friday, and the season end date from a Wednesday to Friday and leaving the second round start day on a Saturday will flow with the reduction of the teams. Overall, the NBA playoff system champions would play a maximum of 22 games and a minimum of 13 games, decreasing the playoffs by almost 2 weeks. Yes, this system seems much harder to get into but it will allow the teams to play their best in order to make it into the
