When a government issues a ban on a group of people in the military, it claims it is for the safety of the troop members and the good of the military. A ban was placed of a group of people who are deemed a threat for no other reason other than the way they were born. These people are discriminated against for an irreversible trait over which they have no control. The harmless decision to express themselves and be comfortable in their skin is considered a shameful act. So shameful that someone thought they shouldn’t be allowed to protect their country. Exclusion of groups can make one feel afraid of being themselves in case they are harassed for it. Being oneself should not be punished if it is harmless. Even if it seems to have disappeared with time, the whispers of it remain. Prejudice can be direct. Not allowing a homosexual person to work for you, but let anyone else work for you is discrimination. On the other hand, prejudice can be harder to spot. In schools, children may make offhand comments that may not be considered “socially acceptable”. They are growing children and they may not understand how words hurt other people. But as they grow older, they become aware of the impact of their words and some use them to harm. Bullying occurs for many reasons. Any trait can pointed out and ridiculed, but since this essay isn’t just covering bullying, this will be covering one specific target for bullying: sexuality and gender. The term “gay”, before it was known as a synonym for joy, was sometimes used as an insult. It was meant to emasculate a victim even if said victim was not homosexual. Students have been punished at school for wearing clothes that do not match the expected garments socially associated with their gender. Since females in trousers started to become more common, this happens more with men. Why is it considered odd that a man wears a dress? Why should he be ashamed of it? If a transgender woman is forced to go by a name and use pronouns that she is not comfortable with, who are we to deny her basic decency by respecting her self-expression? Don’t these people
