Everybody’s life is valuable, but some is just less than others. Some of the people behind the prison bars could be innocent and could be put to death for no reason. Some people might say that people that kill, should be killed also, but putting people to death is not the answer. If the person ends up being innocent then if they are put to death then it is the same as murder. Since 1973, there has been a total of 151 people released from death row, because they proved their innocence (“Death Penalty and Innocence”).…

The quality of the defense counsel and the race of the defendant and/or victim are two of the most important factors. More likely than not, the defendants facing the death penalty cannot afford their own attorney. This means that they are given an attorney by the state. These attorneys may lack experience is such big cases or are underpaid, therefore, they don’t even try to investigate the correct way. When it comes to race, studies have shown that the death penalty is more likely to be used when a black person murders a white person.…

Many appeals are filed by the convicts in hopes of overturning their conviction or to change their sentence to life imprisonment. However, no consideration is taken in respect to the cost to taxpayers for the local, state, and federal government to respond to and process these appeals. Many states have laws providing funds for the legal defense and appeals for convicted felons. That money could be better spent elsewhere. The money that would be saved could be spent on bettering the nation and domestic problems in our country.…

It’s in place more these days to make criminals stop and ponder if their lives are worth ending just to take the life of another, even if regular prison time is meant to do the same. But the concept is not as flawless as simply processing criminals and placing the capital offenders on death row ready for the lethal injection, it’s much more complex. No one should rightfully be advocates of death but when that said person for instance was involved in a school shooting and was arrested and placed on death row for taking the lives of say ten young adults should they really be allowed to live out their days in prison or should they be given the lethal injection for their crimes. Although it is understandable if the person on death row was for example convicted of say murdering their spouse and there was no solid evidence of that person committing the crime but they still get put on the waiting list to be executed, only to later after the execution find the missing evidence that cleared their name, that is understandable. But in that rare occurrence it is the justice system at fault.…

Data is unfortunately incomplete or difficult to comb through thoroughly to obtain an exact amount spent, but it appears that the expenses start to occur during the trial phase of capital litigation. Results for this are because of longer pre-trial periods, a longer and more intensive voir die process, longer trials, more time spent by attorneys preparing cases, more investigative and expert services, and an expensive penalty phase trial that does not occur at all in non-death penalty cases (Steiker and Steiker 405). Back in 2009 there were at least eleven state legislatures who considered bills to abolish the death penalty, all concerns were pointing at cost. Over time New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Illinois, and Connecticut have abolished the death penalty, and once again the high cost of maintaining a properly functioning death penalty system was the reason for the abolishment. National studies suggest that each additional capital trail causes an increase in county spending of more than two million dollar and theses costs are borne primarily by increasing taxes.…

Majority of the states in America have capital punishment, yet out of that number, a greater part of them do not even use the death penalty. These states are “death penalty states” in name only since some of them, such as Kansas and New Hampshire have not executed anyone in many decades (David Garland). There is no need to be classified as a death penalty state when capital punishment is never put in to action. Whereas there are states such as California and Pennsylvania who sentence many murderers to death but very rarely do they execute them (David Garland). As a result, this leaves hundreds of inmates living on “death row” with no indication as to whether they will live or be one of the unlucky few whose sentence is actually carried out.…
