This shows that with the death penalty in place it helps protect the safety of the people because of the deterrence. Not only does it prevent people from doing these thing but it also “provides a deterrence for people already serving a life sentence” (Messerli). With more people in the Unites States knowing the result for their actions, less will be willing to accept the consequences. Anti-death penalty activist argue that even though the execution itself is not expensive, after the trials and jury selection the costs are outrageous. Former Executive Director of the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) expressed...“Jury selection, the trial itself, and initial appeals will consume years of time and enormous amounts of money before an execution is on the horizon” (Diaeter). Although the process might be expensive it does not take into consideration the rise of cost of living.
